Hillcross Primary School

Session 1

After a few warm up games we looked at how actors use their bodies to portray different emotions making statues. Phil added some music for the statues to then move to and we noticed how different feelings produced different movements. We then began to look at the story of a Soldiers Tale. Different people acted out the various parts – including some inanimate objects such as the fiddle and the photograph.

Questions:
Is the fiddle supposed to represent the Soldiers’ soul?
What do we think of when we hear the word ‘Devil’?
How does the story leave us feeling at the end?

Follow up work:
The Back story of the Fiddle. Think about how Joseph the Soldier acquired the fiddle in the first place. Was it given to him? Did he buy it? Did he teach himself to play it, or did somebody teach him? Write a few sentences to tell the story. Write these as a comment below...

Session 2

In this session we split into two groups. Group 1 worked with Liz, creating freeze-frames of the story in groups, in 5 separate scenes.

Group 2 worked with Phil, creating some background music for the Soldier's marching scenes.
keyboard, guitar, djembe & violin (fiddle)
You can hear one of the group compositions here:

Can you hear the regular beat which helps it sound like marching music? You should be able to chant the opening narration to it:

Down a hot and dusty road,
Tramps a soldier with his load.
Ten days' leave he has to spend,
Will his journey never end?
